5 CARLOS PLACE
7 - 12 October 2024
5 Carlos Place, Mayfair, London
A showcase In partnership with Mount Street Neighbourhood Arts Festival hosted at 5 Carlos Place in Mayfair during Frieze and PAD London.
Featuring over 50 artists and over 160 works spanning painting, photography, sculpture, prints, jewellery and fashion. Artists took on the role of guest store assistants alongside Sarabande staff, engaging visitors in direct conversations about their work and the foundation’s impact. A panel discussion with artists Stephen Akpo, Jo Grogan, Megan Brown and Shola Branson with A Vibe Called Tech explored the importance of contemporary creativity.
The pop-up gives the public a chance to witness the posthumous effect of McQueen’s creativity on subsequent generations and to own pieces by them — whether that’s a tea-towel for £15 or £19,000 for a ring by Shola Branson.
THE TIMES
TITLE BY JUDAS COMPANION
A particularly striking piece is a knitted orange mask with a bold, almost grotesquely wide mouth complete with diamond teeth. Is it a smile or a grimace? One eye is blind, the other is an open hole that you see the world out of if you’re wearing the mask or, if unworn, stands as an empty void. Where the other eye should be situated is a cluster of crystals, almost like coagulated blood – perhaps the eye has been gouged out? Maybe it never existed at all.
There is a violence in this aesthetic that makes me think more deeply about what we’re seeing and experience an unconventional new beauty.
