Bex Massey is a figurative painter who investigates notions of ‘worth’ via motifs and tones extracted from their childhood. Massey’s works and exhibitions engage the codes and history of queer culture, along with markers of selfhood and Northern identity. Their paintings offer a nod to the post digital split screen, and they discuss ideals of ‘value’ and pressure via the relationships between the minimal conflations.
Massey's canvas focus on two images, which they manipulate to create a visual echo between the two halves. These oil on canvas pairings also encourage allusion to female bodies, building an underlying sexual tension into quotidian objects. Aphrodite is from Massey's series 'The Agalma': Made on residency at Sarabande in 2025 and exhibited in their titular solo show at Seventeen in the same year.
