The stripper/high-heel foot is an instantly recognisable cultural object — exaggerated, glamorous and associated with sex, nightlife and femininity.
The plinth and presentation borrow from the language of sculpture, museums and luxury retail — similar to how a precious handbag or luxury object might be displayed.
This creates a tension between “high” and “low”, luxury and trash, precious and disposable.
It raises questions around taste — who decides what is considered good or bad taste, and what objects are deemed worthy of being elevated and taken seriously?
The enormous scale makes it feel almost architectural, while still being ridiculous, glamorous, sexual and slightly intimidating.
The work comes from Ella’s attraction to exaggerated femininity, artificiality, performance and excess, rather than being a criticism of those things.
