There is this really delicate, awkward line we walk every day: Offering help can feel patronising... But keeping your distance can feel completely isolating. I wanted to explore that tension, the moments where a person is totally unreadable. We look at someone who looks frail, and we automatically assume they are helpless. But they might not be. Or, we see someone navigating their day, and we assume they don't need a thing, when they are actually drowning. By taking away their faces and giving them these bright, blank circles, I am hiding their expressions. Because when we can't read someone... we just project our own assumptions onto them. We stop seeing the actual person, and we just start seeing our own guesses.
